Daniël François Scheurleer 1855 - 1927

Daniël François Scheurleer was a member of the Hague banking firm of Scheurleer & Sons. His historical importance however derives from his activities in the fields of music and historiography. His large and valuable musical library and collection of musical instruments constituted the private ‘Scheurleer Museum of the History of Music'. After his death this was transformed into the music department of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. At present the library is part of the NMI collections.

Scheurleer was chairman of numerous musical societies, and founded the Société Union Musicologique in 1921. Of his 42 years on the Board of the Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis (VNM), Scheurleer served as chairman for 31 years. His personal engagement greatly stimulated research in Dutch music history. For his study of ‘Musical Life in the Netherlands in the Second Half of the 18th Century', and for his historical research and administrative activities, he was granted an honorary doctorate by the University of Leiden in 1910.
