Samuel de Lange: Nocturne en Romance

In collaboration with the De Lange Foundation the NMI has published a composition by Samuel de Lange Jr. for four celli.

The manuscript of Nocturne und Romanze was found in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart. The work was previously unpublished.

Samuel de Lange Jr. (1840-1911) was born in Rotterdam. Though he did not play the instrument himself, he was acquainted with the cello since childhood. His younger brother Daniel became a cellist of international stature. Samuel de Lange Jr. was well known as an organist and pianist. In 1893 he accepted a teaching post at the Stuttgart conservatory, of which he eventually became director.

Nocturne und Romanze was completed in December 1900 in Stuttgart.
