Study Room and Reading Room
In the NMI Reading Room you will find reference works, serial music publications and journals. These parts of the collection are freely accessible with a Reading Room pass. The major part of the collections is kept under climate control in depot. With a valid year pass you can order these materials and in many cases borrow them. The Reading Room is open Tuesday till Friday 10.00 till 17.00.
Archive materials and special library materials can be consulted in the Study Room (by appointment only).
Reading Room

At the desk directly opposite the entrance you are welcome with all your information requests. Our staff is permanently available to help you find your way.
Reference works and journals
In the Reading Room you will find publications in the following areas of interest: general music history, history of musical life in the Netherlands, historical performance practice, history of repertoire, (historical) musical instruments, history of music printing, historical dance and composers' biographies. Also there are serial music publications (such as opera omnia) and a large collection of music on microfiches, as well as a large number of music journals. Some of these are digitally accessible as e-journal for year pass owners. A year pass is also required for requests from the depot.
PC's
ln the Reading Room you may consult online catalogues, databases and play CDs, CD-ROMs en DVDs.
Sound studios
In a separate cabin you can make use of a study piano to play through music from the collection. A cabin with sound equipment is available by appointment.
Self copying
The Reading Room contains photocopiers and a microfiche printer. For prices, see the Price List.

Study Room
In the Study Room year pass holders can consult archive materials and old prints. A staff member is present to lend assistance.
Requests
For the consultation of archives and documentation materials it is obligatory to make an appointment with the custodian. Original library materials normally available on microfiche, as well as materials kept in the safe (request number ‘kluis’) may only be consulted by appointment with the librarian. A few archives, mostly of recent date, are for reasons of privacy not open to the public. The custodian may give more information.
Inventories
Most archives have been described in inventories on paper which can be consulted locally. A small but growing number of inventories are made available in digital format on this website.
Ordering reproductions
Self copying of materials which may only be consulted in the Study Room is not permitted. Instead, you may ask the assistant in the Study Room for an order form. In some instances photocopies and scans will be made at once.
Laptops
In the Study Room there are sockets for connecting a laptop. Through the KB you can make use of the services of Eduroam, which provides safe and easy wireless internet access to students and employees of institutions connected to SURFnet. This service will in the future be made available to all KB year pass holders.
Self made photographs
Under certain restrictions it is permitted in the Study Room to make photographs of materials with your own camera. See the full Regulations below.
