Editorial remarks
The four letters which are published here for the first time have the following inventory numbers: NMI 064/IC29 (3-6-[1866]), NMI 064/IC30 (21-6-1867), NMI 064/IC31 (20-8-1867), NMI 064/IC32 (26-8-1870).
According to family tradition the Liszt-Von Schwartz correspondence comprised some two hundred letters (communication of Mr. Peter Stoetzer, Hamburg). Von Schwartz donated a number (most?) of her Liszt letters in 1888 to the first custodian of the Liszt Museum, Carl Gille (unpublished letter of Von Schwartz to La Mara, May 21 1892, GSA 59/415,2). Nowadays the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv in Weimar hosts twelve letters from Liszt to Von Schwartz and fifteen from Von Schwartz to Liszt. A few of these have been included in the anthologies edited by La Mara (which are not fully reliable). It is unknown whether more letters remain in other archives. Maybe a complete edition of the Liszt-Von Schwartz correspondence will provide an opportunity for a more thorough study of their relations.
All known letters in this correspondence are written in French, Liszt's preferred language. In the four letters in this presentation there is no salutation; this is usual in his informal contacts. The identification of the addressee as M.E. von Schwartz had been registered in the Bory Collection (see the Introduction), and the contents proves this to be correct. From her side Von Schwartz addresses Liszt with expressions like "Très Révérendissime et très aimé", "Très aimé et très aimable Révérendissime."
Liszt's handwriting is remarkably clear, regular and legible, considering how much pressure his vast correspondence put on him. For ease of reading and searchability transcriptions have been added to the reproductions of the letters. These have been made as literal as possible, with the following reservations:
(1) Liszt's few standard abbreviations have been silently completed (doubling the overlined n and m, de/du for d); (2) incidental abbreviations have been completed between square brackets; (3) accents have been added conform standard spelling. In spite of inconsistencies, capitalization follows the manuscript. No modernization was applied to spelling (e.g. "sentimens"); punctuation (to the extent that it is recognizable) has been maintained.
The translation must be considered provisional, and it was made without any pretense of matching style and tone of the originals. Since the original text is reproduced as well, some idiosyncrasies have been ignored in favour of a uniform, readable presentation. Paragraphs were defined on the basis of subject rather than in accordance with the manuscript. Quote marks have been standardized; underlinings (and sometimes quote marks) have been replaced by italicization. Titles of works are also italicized. Additions which are not included in the transcription are placed between square brackets.
The annotations are intended primarily (1) to provide for the non-specialist a general historical and biographical context within which the letters acquire meaning; (2) to identify persons and works; (3) to clarify obscure references. Titles of Liszt's works are cited according to the catalogue by Maria Eckhardt and Rena Charnin Mueller (LW) in Grove Music Online.
Acknowledgments
For his enthusiastic sharing of information and providing materials from his family archive we thank Dipl.-Ing. MBA Peter Stoetzer in Hamburg, great-great-grandson of Espérance von Schwartz. Unpublished letters were consulted in photocopies obtained from the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv in Weimar.
